GROUNDED CHALK ARTS FESTIVAL CREATES BEAUTY ON PAVEMENT
The second annual Grounded Chalk Arts Festival drew 24 area teams and individuals to the Norris Stadium parking lot Oct. 26 [FRIDAY] at East Central University.
Entrants had six hours to complete an artwork that filled one parking space. They could use chalk or dry tempera as a coloring agent.
The ECU Art Department and Art Club sponsored the festival that included teams from Ardmore, Byng, Coalgate, Marietta and Vanoss High Schools. Most schools worked in teams of four, although several individuals also joined in the effort, said Dr. Brad Jessop, chair of the Art Department.
The "Thunder Biscuits" team from Coalgate High School won first place. Second place went to ECU student Britini Parker of Ada, competing as an individual, and third place went to "Dyana," the team from Byng High School.
"Drawing began in the cool morning at 10 and progressed through out the day until 4 in the afternoon," Jessop said. "Compositions were judged for use of space, contrast, color, proportion and craftsmanship, all of which are particularly challenging when working in chalk on pavement."
