New parking regulations will go into effect Tuesday [DEC. 1] for the visitor parking lot south of the University Center on the East Central University campus. The parking lot will be open only to vehicles displaying "visitor parking" permits from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

During all other times, including weekends, the lot will be open to all parking permit types.

All visitors must have the visitor parking permit on the dashboard of their vehicles. Warnings for violations will be issued from Tuesday through Friday [DEC. 1-4]. After that, ECU police officers will implement foot patrols during the weekday hours to issue citations to violators.

"This has been a parking lot for visitors for years, but it has been difficult to keep it available just for visitors," said Dr. Steve Turner, ECU vice president for administration and finance. "We want to ensure we have parking spaces for our guests."

The visitor parking permits are available for official guests of the university, prospective students and their families, Wellness Center patrons from the community or other visitors. They are valid only in the visitor parking lot, Turner said.

To get a parking permit, visitors should park in the visitor lot and go to the information booth on the first floor of the University Center. They will provide information about their vehicle and the nature of their visit to receive a parking permit day pass. They must return to the vehicle to place the permit on the dashboard.

Wellness Center patrons from the community will receive letters explaining the permit process, Turner said. They can present their Wellness Center ID cards at the information booth to receive a non-transferable permit which they can renew each semester.

"There will be special events that will cause us to close the lot to the public, and when possible those dates will be posted in advance at the information booth," Turner said.

Anyone planning an event in the University Center that requires visitor parking should coordinate the request for permits through Robert Hayes, facilities coordinator, at 559-5741.
