Eligibility Requirements
The US Department of Education determines the regulation and
eligibility requirements for the Veterans Upward Bound Program.
Below is all the information you need to determine if you are
eligible to participate.
A VUB Participant:
Must be a citizen
- A citizen or national of the United States; or
- A permanent resident of the United States; or
- In the United States for other than a temporary
purpose and provides evidence from the Immigration
and Naturalization Service of his or her intent to
become a permanent resident; or
- Is a permanent resident of Guam, the Northern
Mariana Islands, or the Trust Territory of the
Pacific Islands; or
- Is a resident of the Freely Associated States –
the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of
the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau.
Must be a veteran
- Who served for a period of more than 180 days,
any part of which occurred after January 31, 1955,
and who was discharged or released from active duty
under conditions other than dishonorable; or
- After January 31, 1955, and who was discharged
or released from active duty because of a
service-connected disability.
Must be low income and/or first generation
- Income levels are based on taxable income and
are set by the U. S. Department of Education.
- First generation means neither parent nor
guardian has a Baccalaureate Degree.
Must live in the target area
- Target area includes the following 5 counties
in Oklahoma: Carter, Comanche, Murray, Pontotoc, and Stephens.
Must have a need for our academic services
Academic need includes but is not limited to
refresher or remedial services in English, math,
science, reading, writing, computer skills, and/or a
foreign language; subject areas in which VUB offers
academic services.
