Athletic Training Education Program Admissions

Every year the East Central University Athletic Training Program allows potential applicants to apply for admission to the program. Admissions process is competitive as accreditation guidelines govern the number of students who can be in the ECU-ATEP. The applicants are required to submit a completed application to the Director of Athletic Training by March 1st.

Athletic Training Observation Log

Applicants who meet the admissions requirements and submit their application prior to March 1 are scored on an admissions scoring rubric. This tool allows the selection committee to objectively evaluate all applications, both those fully qualified and those not meeting all admission criteria. The applicants with the top scores (relative to how many open spaces are available in the program) will receive interviews with the selection committee.

Applicant Interviews

Applicant interviews will be conducted in April. These interviews are designed to offer the applicant the opportunity to further express their personal goals and interests in the program. It is also a time in which the committee can disclose additional information to the applicant regarding the operation of the program. Any questions the applicant has may be addressed at this time. For applicants who do not meet all of the admission criteria, but are granted interviews, their deficiencies are addressed and a strategy is developed by the applicant and the committee members to direct the applicant toward fulfilling all of the admission criteria within a specified time frame. If there is a pool of fully qualified applicants that exceeds the number of open position in the program, no interviews will be extended to applicants not meeting all admission criteria.

Admissions Scoring & Applicant Ranking

Applications are reviewed to determine an individual admission score.  Total admission score is based upon:
      Application Score - 30 points
      Essay Score - 20 points
      Interview Score - 100 points
      Total Score - 150 points

Applicants are ranked in order of scores highest to lowest.

Letters of Notification

Applicants will receive letters of notification in June to let them know if they have been accepted to the program. If accepted all students will be expected to report to the ATEP Student Orientation held the week before football pre-season workouts start.

Full Admission

Applicants that meet all admission criteria without any application criteria deficiencies and undergo a successful interview may be selected for full admission.

Conditional Admission

Upon the selection of all fully qualified applicants, if there remains space available in the program, applicants not meeting all admission criteria may be offered conditional admission into the program. A conditional admission contract will be drawn, with the requirements and the time for completion set forth by the selection committee. The applicant and program director must both sign this contract, which stipulates what the applicant must complete in order to remain in the program. Failure to uphold this contract may result in suspension or removal of the student from the program.

Transfer Admission

Advanced placement of transfer students will only be allowed if the students are transferring from an institution that maintains a current articulation agreement with ECU-ATEP. This agreement ensures that students who come to ECU from an affiliated institution meet the same educational standards and guidelines as students already in ECU-ATEP. For students wishing to transfer to ECU from another CAATE accredited athletic training education program, they must meet with the ECU Program Director. After reviewing the courses for content, the student may be allowed to complete an ECU-ATEP transfer equivalency examination. A skill based examination may also be required for specific courses. Upon satisfactory completion on such exams, transfer credit may be accepted into the ECU-ATEP from other accredited athletic training education program. However, transfer credit may be awarded without specific review by the ECU-ATEP.
