Department of Health Information Management

The four-year program in Health Information Management leads to a Bachelor of Science degree by combining liberal arts, basic sciences, and professional courses. The program consists of 28 semester hours of related courses and 50 semester hours of professional courses. This program does not require a minor.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write the American Health Information Management Association's national exam for certification. Satisfactory completion of this exam entitles the graduate to use the designation RHIA, Registered Health Information Administrator, after his/her name.

The Health Information Management Program is an accredited program and is awarded such accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

As stated by CAHIIM, "When a program is accredited by CAHIIM, it means that it has voluntarily undergone a rigorous review process and has been determined to meet or exceed the standards set by the sponsoring professional organization--the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)--in cooperation with the Commission.  CAHIIM accreditation is a way to recognize and publicize best practices for HIM Education Programs."
