As an enrolled nursing major at East Central University, you are eligible and qualify for a number of University, Local, State and National Scholarships and awards. Below is a partial list.
Terms of the Scholarship:
The scholarship provides a stipend for one student working toward the B.S. degree in Nursing. A student who receives the scholarship and continues to pursue this degree, completes at least 24 credit hours per year and maintains at least an overall 3.25 grade point average (GPA) will be re-awarded the scholarship for a maximum of eight consecutive, regular semesters (not summer school semesters. The stipend is based upon the earnings on the principal of the endowment and will be about $1,000.00 per year of full time enrollment at ECU. An amount equal to half of the stipend is provided to the recipient by the ECU Foundation at the start of each fall and spring semester. The name of the recipient of the scholarship is announced at the annual College of Health and Sciences awards ceremony held in April.
Eligibility:
A student in good standing with the Nursing department and ECU who has completed at least one regular semester of course work, is enrolled as a full time student and has an overall GPA of at least 3.25.
A student who is seeking the B.S. degree in Nursing.
Selection Process:
The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Nursing department. The chair of Nursing is ultimately responsible for the selection. No application required. Nursing faculty select the recipient based upon GPA, professionalism, performance in clinical and demonstration of leadership such as participation in the student organization.
Continuation Terms and Details:
The holder of the scholarship will automatically be re-awarded the scholarship for a maximum of four years (eight consecutive , regular college semesters) if the student maintains at least a 3.25 GPA overall, completes at least 24 credit hours per academic year in course leading to the degree of B. S. - Nursing and remains in good standing with the department and the University. Should the student declare a second major, the student may continue to receive the scholarship for nursing under the conditions above so long as the second major is not in one of the five other departments supported by the Pfeffer scholarships.
Scholarship Guidelines
Up to 10 nursing students are selected each year to be awarded $250.00 each at the annual Awards Ceremony held in April to be used for the purchase of nursing textbooks. No application necessary. Students are selected by the Nursing Alumni Association based on need, GPA and professionalism.
The East Central University Nursing Student Association on the Ada campus awards up to four $100.00 scholarships annually at the Awards Ceremony in April each year. Students must be active members of ECUNSA, not officers and write a short essay on their goals in the nursing profession. There are a large number of scholarships and awards available for all students, including nursing majors, on the ECU and SOSU campuses. Generally, students enrolled at the AHEC as nursing majors will qualify for ECU scholarships and awards. Most of the local and state hospitals where students have clinical rotations also have scholarships for nursing students. Please check with the Personnel Director or Human Resources Department at the hospital in which you are interested. Most of these scholarships cover tuition and books, but have a "payback" requirements for you to work at the facility for one or two years after graduation.
The service area for the ECU nursing program at the Ada, Durant and Ardmore campuses includes the tribal areas for both the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian Nations. Both tribes have a major commitment to health care in their areas and are experiencing nursing shortages. If you are an American Indian, please contact the tribal headquarters for your tribe to receive information about available scholarships. There are some scholarships that are local and come directly from tribal funds and others that a national through the Indian Health Service. These scholarships generally cover tuition, books and provide a living stipend for the duration of the program. There is generally a requirement to work for a designated Indian facility for one or two years after graduation.
This scholarship is sponsored by the State of Oklahoma through the Physician Manpower Training Commission. It provides assistance to Oklahoma nursing students who are interested in practicing nursing in Oklahoma communities. The student must be a US citizen and resident of Oklahoma. Applicants must be unconditionally admitted to ECU's nursing program. Scholarship amounts vary from year to year depending on the number of qualified applicants and the amount of money allocated by the Oklahoma legislature. Maximum scholarships are for $4,000.00 per year. Students must work in Oklahoma at a health care facility for at least one year after graduation or the amount of the scholarship must be repaid.
