The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a studio concentration is the professional undergraduate degree in the visual arts.  It prepares students to make images in a wide variety of media but also focuses study on one of the traditional studio disciplines.  Students with this degree are prepared for careers as gallery artists, studio sales, artists assistants, and for further study in graduate school.  The students face rigorous studio training, with a focus on exhibiting their artwork at professional venues.  Students choosing to major in Studio Arts have continued their study in MFA programs or become professional artists. Graduates of the ECU Art Department have gone on to attend Carnegie-Mellon, Purdue University, University of Arkansas, University of South Carolina, and University of Oklahoma. These students were then able to obtain faculty positions at Stephen F. Austin University, Texas Tech University and other higher education institutions. Others are gallery owners, or studio artists. Two former ECU students have work in the prestigious New York Museum of Modern Art.

 

Graphic Design Major 020

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design prepares students for careers in the fields of design, graphic design, typography, layout, publication and corporate image design, or fields in which these skills are applicable.  Student’s studies are grounded in traditional studio skills, but are augmented through state of the art digital facilities and real world experiences.  Students graduating in this area have secured employment in media graphics with: Pre-Paid Legal, US Postal Service, Texas Monthly, The Dallas Morning News, The Daily Ardmorite, OERB and others. An exciting internship program is offered through our Media Graphics Partnership with the Communications Department!

 

Art Education Major 021

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Arts Education concentration prepares students for careers as Art Teachers with certificates to teach pre-kindergarten through the grade twelve. These students are prepared in a wide variety of media, but with an emphasis on utilizing their artistic skills to assist children to develop their artistic vision.  Students are prepared in the aspects of producing art, critiquing art, art history, and aesthetics through a critical pedagogic philosophy.  Students in this field are teaching throughout Oklahoma and Texas. In the last five years four graduates were selected "teacher of the year' for their district the first year they taught! In 2004. The Da Vinci scholar, the states most outstanding arts education graduate, was an ECU student.
