Master of Science in Psychological Services

    Graduate training in our department leads to a Master of Science degree in Psychological Services. In the graduate program, our primary mission is to train students in the methods, philosophy, and ethics of applied practice so that graduates will be capable of providing psychological services in the community. The graduate work involves both coursework and participation supervised practicum in the area. Graduate are eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and as a Licensed Behavioral Practitioner (LBP).

    The Master of Science in Psychological Services degree is designed to develop professionals who can function as psychologists or psychological assistants in such settings as mental health centers, guidance centers, mental hospitals, alcohol and drug treatment centers, correctional institutions, and the independent practice of a Licensed Professional Counselor. The role of the psychologist and the psychological assistant is to help people more fully to develop their potential for creative productivity and emotional satisfaction.

    The following general objectives are intended to prepare students to fill this role:

  1. to provide opportunities for students to acquire knowledge of the general principles involved in providing psychological services;
  2. to prepare students to understand research methodology and to use research reports and psychological literature; and
  3. to prepare students to provide the psychological services of counseling, consulting, and evaluating.
