Career Counseling
Freshman Year
Finding Resources and Guidance
- Visit the Office of Career Development in McBride Room 108.
- Register for the Discover Program through OCD.
- Enroll in core courses with help of advisor and excel in classes.
- Talk with parents, your professors, and the OCD about careers.
- Take a computer class. Use a computer to do coursework, papers, etc.
- Gain experience with an off or on campus job.
- Meet with a career counselor in the OCD. Do career testing with the Discover Program.
- Begin to identify career interests, skills, and personality style.
- Attend a resume workshop.
- Seek supportive services when necessary such as tutoring, advising, and study skills.
- Ask for help if needed!
Sophomore Year
- Develop a resume and have it critiqued by a career counselor.
- Talk with professionals in careers of interest to you.
- Continue working with a career counselor online or in person.
- Attend an interviewing and job search workshop or meet with a career counselor for assistance.
- Plan to do an internship.
- Get involved in student activities at ECU.
- Decide on your major.
Your Junior Year
- Visit the East Central University Office of Career Development and start your Discover account with inventory testing and much more!
- Talk with your parents, your professors, the OCD, professionals and alumni about careers of interest to you.
- Meet with a career counselor in the OCD. Do career testing; begin to identify your career interests, skills, talents, and personality style. Develop a resume and have it viewed by a career counselor.
- Take a computer class to develop your technology skills. Use a computer to do coursework, papers, etc. Develop skills in word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, and desktop publishing. Become familiar with the Internet.
- Do an internship in your major or area of interest.
- Attend:
- career workshops
- on-campus recruiting
- various Society of Success events
- Develop leadership skills through student activities such as clubs and organizations.
- Prepare for and take the needed graduate admissions test. (e.g. GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, Millers Analogy)
Senior Year
- Complete final internships in your field.
- Get your job file active in the ECU Office of Career Development by late fall.
- If you haven't to date join the ECU chapter of Society of Success organization.
- Update your resume early in the fall semester for your job search and for participation in the on-campus fall career fair and on-campus recruiters.
- Take a great opportunity to enroll in Dr. Susan Miller's ECU Business Etiquette Class available once each fall/spring semester for both undergraduate and graduate credit. Dr. Miller teaches solid business etiquette skills for resume, dress, social occasions, interviews and more.
- Plan your graduate school or job search campaign. Meet again with the OCD staff to get help with this.
- Work with the OCD staff to develop interview and job search skills. Sign up for a mock interview.
- Use all opportunities to meet employers: job fairs, networking, guest speaker events, etc.
- Get references for graduate school applications and job interviews.
- If you do not have a job going into your final months before graduation, meet with the OCD staff to plan your job search.
