What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered through which you can gain access to materials (books, articles, etc.) not owned in the Linscheid Library. Loan procedures are regulated by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, by United States copyright law, and by the regulations and policies of the lending and borrowing libraries.
Is there a difference between Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery?
Yes. Document Delivery is a service available to users of the Linscheid Library that are enrolled in courses at remote campuses (Shawnee, McAlester, Ardmore and Southeastern). This service provides access to books and articles owned by the Linscheid Library to these locations via courier.
Who can make Interlibrary Loan requests?
Current East Central University faculty, staff, and students may use ILL services.
What types of materials are available through Interlibrary Loan?
Most circulating books and photocopies of journal articles are generally available. Requests for reference books, genealogical materials, curriculum materials, entire issues of periodicals, rare or fragile materials, audiovisual materials, and dissertations are generally not successful.
How do I request a document through Interlibrary Loan?
Determine that the Linscheid Library does not hold the item:
- If you are looking for a magazine or journal article, check full-text availability through one of the electronic databases.
- If you are looking for a book, do a title or author search on the CatPac (online catalog).
Once you have determined that you cannot print the text of the article, or if the book is not in our collection, fill out the online form.
Filling out the form:
- Provide complete and unabbreviated information (complete title, journal name, author information, etc.).
- Enter your name and entire fourteen digit university ID number.
If you need help finding complete information, consult a reference librarian.
How long does it take?
The length of time between your request and receipt of materials depends on a number of factors such as mail service, lending library location, and type of material requested. Allow at least ten days from the date of the request. Be sure to fill out the "Item not needed after..." section on the request form; requests not filled by this date will be canceled.
Where do I pick up the document?
The ILL department will notify you by campus e-mail when your material has been received. You will pick up your document at the Circulation Desk of the library.
Does Interlibrary Loan cost?
The Linscheid Library does not charge a fee for Interlibrary Loan services. While most materials can be borrowed from libraries that do not charge fees, occasionally materials can only be received from a library that charges lending fees. You are responsible for these charges, but you will be notified before we process the request. You can then decide whether or not to proceed.
How long can I keep the document?
Loan periods, typically 2-4 weeks, are determined by the lending library. Most libraries do not permit renewal of ILL items. If you need to renew the material, call the ILL office (580.559.5374) three days before the due date. Photocopies of articles are yours to keep and do not need to be returned.
Where should the item be returned?
Return all borrowed items to the Circulation Desk.
