Linscheid Library
General Copyright Policy for Audiovisual Materials
- The library duplicates any part of any copyrighted audiovisual material if permission to do so has been obtained from the copyright holder. Written permission is preferred; verbal permission is appropriate if given directly to the library by the copyright holder and is followed by a written confirmation. The library can assist users in contacting the copyright holder for this purpose.
- Limited duplication of copyrighted audiovisual materials may be permissible under the Fair Use guidelines in the Copyright Law. The Audiovisual Librarian can assist users in determining whether duplicating would fall under Fair Use.
- The instructor who chooses to duplicate audiovisual materials in the library's collections, in whole or in part, must assume full responsibility for that action.
- The library will make archival copies of copyrighted audiovisual materials in the Library's collections only with written permission of the copyright holder. Copyright law does not permit making archival copies of any material except computer software without the permission of the copyright holder.
- If multiple copies of copyrighted audiovisual materials are needed, they must be purchased unless duplication permission is obtained from the copyright holder.
All materials housed in the Audiovisual Department are subject to copyright restrictions as detailed in Copyright Law, Title 17 of the United States Code. Users should be cautious in their interpretation of fair use provisions.
