SIGALO

Serials Interest Group for Academic Libraries in Oklahoma

April 4, 1997

Student Union, Emerald Room

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma

Chickasha, Oklahoma

The meeting opened with a welcome from Marta Woltz, Director of Nash Library, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.  She outlined the day's agenda, mentioned lunch options and the building layout.  The current SIGALO program team consisting of Jim Wilkerson, Southwestern Oklahoma State University; Nancy Jurney, Langston University; Ila Grice, University of Oklahoma; and Martha Woltz were introduced.  (The list of attendees is attached.)

Nancy Jurney of Langston University moderated the morning roundtable.  The discussion centered on selection policies for serials and faculty requests.  Participants introduced themselves and shared information about their institutions' policies and procedures.  Some members had hard copies of policies, procedures, and/or forms to hand out to the group.

The morning concluded with a tour of Nash Library.  Lunch was "on your own."

The afternoon session opened with Member News.  Starla Doescher, University of Oklahoma, announced that several public universities were meeting to discuss the formation of a consortia for bindery.  Exchange lists were handed out.  Information about OCLC Union List being loaded onto FirstServe was given.

Pat Weaver-Meyers, acting Director of Information Management and Delivery, University of Oklahoma, was the afternoon speaker.  She talked about the University of Oklahoma pilot project with Carl Uncover.  The project targeted serials subscriptions in Chemistry and Engineering costing over $2,000.  The project investigated the cost of delivery versus subscriptions.  The OU project has not shown to this time the savings other institutions indicated they experienced.

Jim Wilkerson of Southwestern Oklahoma State University chaired the business meeting.  Ila Grice of the University of Oklahoma presented the minutes for the Nov. 8, 1996, meeting.  The minutes were approved as presented.  The Program Team terms of Jim Wilkerson and Ila Grice are over with this meeting.  Martha Woltz and Nancy Jurney have one more year to serve of their terms.  Donna Denniston, Oklahoma City Community College, and Victoria Swinney, Cameron University, were elected as the new Program Team members for a two-year term.

The next meeting will be held at Oklahoma City Community College, tentatively on Nov. 14, 1997.  Watch your mail for more information.  Topics of interest for the meeting were given.  They are as follows:  the need to register when accessing online journals (invasion of privacy issue); bindery.  Other suggestions can be made directly to the Program Team.

With thanks to Martha Woltz and The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, the meeting was adjourned.
