Southwestern Oklahoma State University

Weatherford, Oklahoma

The Spring 2001 meeting of SIGALO was held at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.  Audrey DeFrank welcomed the group and introduced interim director, Linda Pye.  Audrey then introduced the morning speaker, Susan McVey, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

Susan's presentation was entitled What's Going on with the Statewide Databases?.  She explained what OLTN was (the Oklahoma Library Technology Network, and it's purpose.  There are currently 1400 libraries registered for one or more of the statewide databases available under current statewide licenses.  There are approximately 900 more that could register.  Susan explained the process OLTN goes through to select the databases, the committee members, and who pays for them.  She then explained why we don't have unlimited access to some of the databases--money! She urged all of us to contact our Oklahoma legislature for additional funding.

Dana Belcher chaired the business meeting.  She thanked the outgoing program committee members, Barbara Bradley and Wanda Donica (not present), and introduced the incoming members, Audrey DeFrank and Nancy Jurney.  Suggestions for the website were solicited, and she promoted the SIGALO-L listserv.  It was decided to mount the membership directory on the SIGALO web.

The afternoon roundtable was presented by Dana Belcher, OKULS, LDRs, and ILL.  Dana talked about how East Central University decided to tackle their LDR problem by first purchasing a print copy of LDRs from OCLC.  They then started with their current subscriptions and updated the LDRs.  They are continuing to update older subscription LDRs as time permits.  She stressed the importance of doing a physical inventory before beginning any LDR project.  Dana then gave an overview of the OKULS new web and the resources available to help in updating LDRs.  Finally, she encouraged everyone to involve their ILL departments in the project by having them report false ILL hits due to incorrect LDR information.  ECU's unfilled ILL rate has been reduced by almost 10% since the LDR project began.

The group dismissed to tour the Al Harris Library.
