Serials Interest Group for Academic Libraries in Oklahoma (SIGALO)
And Oklahoma Union List of Serials (OKULS)
Joint Spring 2005 Meeting
Rogers State University
Stratton Taylor Library
May 6, 2005

Louisa Payne called the meeting to order following the OKULS meeting at 11:00.

Announcements
She announced that NASIG will be held in Minneapolis on May 19-23. Also, the second half of the SCCTP Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop will be held on June 8th.

Workshop
Louisa asked Michael Kim, who chairs the Ad Hoc Committee for the SCCTP workshops, to talk about the upcoming Cataloging Workshop. Michael said that we are fortunate to have an trainer in-state, Adriana Edwards-Johnson. He told the group that $920.00 was collected for the first part of the Workshop, which was held on Nov. 10th, 2004. SIGALO spent $913.00, so we had a $6.00 carryover. The Workshop Part 2 is already full, and will also be held in OSU-Tulsa’s Conference Center . Michael suggested that we could also plan to hold a Serial Holdings Workshop. It could be affordable even if we had to invite an out-of-state trainer, if there is enough interest. Michael mentioned that this particular workshop would also be a 2-day affair, and if we got it through AMIGOS, it could cost as much as $400.00.

He thanked Junie Janzen, Janet Hughes, and Marla Roberson for participating in the Ad Hoc Workshop Committee. Louisa volunteered to serve on the Committee as well.

New Business
Louisa suggested that we could open the membership to public librarians officially, and there were no objections among the members. Dana Belcher suggested that we change our name to Serials Interest Group of All Librarians in Oklahoma , which means we keep the same acronym, and the group agreed by acclamation.

Additions to Program Team
Sarah Simpson (TCCL), Kim Edwards (OPSU), and Beverly Dowdy (UCO), and Dona Davidson volunteered to serve on the Program Team for the next 2 years.

Future program suggestions
Beverly Dowdy suggested we host a demo of E-Tracker, a product that registers & maintains e-titles for libraries. Michael said that we could invite vendors offering federated searching products to present. Dana Belcher suggested a program on usage statistics and article-level statistics from databases, which are generally provided by the vendors – who is collecting and using them, and what for? Adri suggested a program on making the transition to MARC holdings, in conjunction with the SCCTP MARC holdings workshop, if we are able to host it.

Next Meeting Location
The group settled on the meeting room at ODL, with a preferred early October date, if possible. Shari Clifton volunteered to forward the meeting announcement to all the Oklahoma health sciences librarians.

Following the lunch break, the group heard a presentation by Dr. Johnny Johnson, Head of Access Services at OSU, How Interlibrary Loan Uses Serials. Dr. Johnson described the interlibrary loan searching processes for serial titles at OSU, and particularly emphasized how important union listing is to interlibrary borrowing of serials, and how it is used.

At 1:30, Audrey DeFrank, head of Reference at SWOSU, gave a presentation on Serials and Bibliographic Instruction, detailing how librarians at SWOSU acquaint patrons with serial print, electronic, and media resources, and, in addition, how public services staff interacts with technical services in the handling of serials.

Both Ms. DeFrank and Dr. Johnson participated in an hour-long panel discussion on Integrating Serials in Public Services, along with panel members Janice Ferris, Rogers State , Beverly Dowdy, UCO, and Shari Clifton, OU-HSC. The panel discussion ranged widely from union listing to on-the-fly bibliographic instruction during reference interviews.

The discussion ran late, and was followed by a tour of the beautiful Stratton Taylor Library.

Respectfully submitted by Michele Seikel, OSU Libraries
