The Department of Music serves the university by providing a general music education foundation for all students, individual professional preparation for selected major fields within the department, and cultural enrichment for both campus and community. As a public institution, the Department of Music at East Central University recognizes and accepts its obligation to serve the community, region, state and profession at large with all its resources and is committed to the basic principle that participating in the development of a musically enlightened citizenry is the most significant contribution it can make to society.

Music performance and study at East Central University center around the triad of rehearsal hall, studio, and classroom. An outstanding, highly qualified faculty of ensemble directors, studio teachers, and academic specialists (seven full-time, seven part-time) guides approximately seventy-five music majors in music literature. The requirements for entrance and for graduation are in accordance with the published standards of National Association of Schools of Music, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities.
