EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY’S UPWARD BOUND MATH/SCIENCE CENTER RECEIVES $297,000 GRANT RENEWAL
The East Central University Upward Bound Math/Science Center has received a $297,000 grant renewal from the U.S. Department of Education, it was recently announced.
The grant is designed to help Upward Bound students strengthen their math and science skills and prepare them for postsecondary educational programs that lead to careers in those fields.
The three priorities of the program are to:
- Turn around persistently lowest achieving schools
- Enable more data-based decision-making
- Improve productivity
The services and activities provided will include academic tutoring, advice and assistance in secondary and postsecondary course selection, preparation for college entrance exams, information on federal student financial aid programs, assistance completing financial aid applications, guidance and assistance in secondary school reentry, alternative education programs for dropouts to get back in school, entry into college, education to improve economic literacy of students, and math through pre-calculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition and literature.
The program provides intensive instruction in mathematics and science, including hands-on experience in laboratories at field-sites; provides activities for students to learn from mathematicians and scientist who are engaged in research; pair students up with undergraduate students in the McNairs Scholars program to serve as mentors; provide an academic six-week program to stimulate a college-going experience with daily coursework and other activities; and provide an academic year component designed to enhance student learning in the most cost-effective way.
