Veterans Upward Bound
Services



Veterans Upward Bound provides academic and other supportive services necessary to prepare participants for pursuit and successful completion of post-secondary programs, such as vocational and technical schools, and 2- and 4-year colleges. An individual education plan is designed for each participant. Individual needs and goals are incorporated into the education plan in an effort to make each veteran post-secondary ready.

Our primary service is Academic Preparation in the form of classes, workshops, and individualized instruction in subjects such as:

English
Math
Science
Literature
Foreign Language
Computers


Computerized instruction is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, via the My Skills Tutor Program. Note: You must obtain a login and password from your VUB counselor to utilize My Skills Tutor.

Our services also include Academic Success Series topics such as:

Goal Setting
Study Skills
Time Management
Reading Improvement
Critical Thinking/Problem Solving.


Individual Tutoring is available.

Instruction for preparation in obtaining GED certification and preparation for a college entrance exam, such as an ACT is also available.

The VUB Computer Lab is available for VUB past and present participant use.
Other Services provided include:

Information regarding the location, availability, and requirements of programs of study at vocational schools and colleges.

Career Counseling and interest assessments to help participants explore career goals and aptitudes. We currently use the Career Occupational Preference System Interest Inventory (COPS) and the Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS) in the career exploration process.

Admissions Assistance to help participants with all the paperwork required in being admitted to a post-secondary program. Requesting high school or previous college transcripts is something we assist with on a regular basis.

Financial Aid Assistance to help participants learn more about their financial aid options. Counselors will assist participants is applying for federal, state, and other types of financial aid. Participants are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) even if he or she may have GI Benefits.

Academic Counseling is provided to ensure individual needs and goals are being met. VUB Counselors work with participants to create an individualized education plan, taking into consideration personal needs and resources available.
