    An informational meeting for persons interested in pursuing the bachelor of social work degree from East Central University is set for April 18 [Monday] at the Eastern Oklahoma State College McAlester campus. The meeting will be held in Room 111 of the Wanda Bass Building from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

    The social work program offers special opportunities for students interested in working in child welfare, and those who wish to work with older adults.

    A new choral work by Ada composers Victoria Davison and Rudy Lupinski and a nearly 300-year-old mass by Franz Joseph Haydn will be performed April 7 [THURSDAY] in a concert by the East Central University Chorale and the ECU Singers. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church and is free and open to the public.

    Dr. Steve Walker is the conductor and accompanists will be pianists Dr. Starla Hibler and Rudy Lupinski.

    Cincinnati Bengals defensive back Roy Williams, recognized as one of the NFL’s most powerful hitters at safety, will speak in a seminar about the reality of substance abuse on April 6 [WEDNESDAY] at East Central University.

    NOTE:  The AHEC special meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 31, to discuss the proposed branch campus has been cancelled. ECU has received tentative assurance from the authors of HB 1227 that East Central University’s programming will be protected. ECU still opposes HB 1227.

    The annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival is back for its sixth year and bigger than ever with four featured authors, including “Where the Heart Is” author Billie Letts. In addition, more than 50 regional, published and emerging authors will make presentations during the three-day festival March 31 – April 2 on the campus of East Central University in Ada. All sessions are free and open to the public.

    Nine music students from East Central University were selected for the 2011 Oklahoma Intercollegiate Honor Band which performed as part of the Oklahoma Music Educators Association convention recently in Tulsa.

    Eight students from Ada, Byng and Latta will be among the 81 junior high and high school students from across the state presenting research papers today [THURSDAY] at the state meet of the Oklahoma Junior Academy of Science. The OJAS meet and the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair are held annually at East Central University.

    Student research papers were certified earlier at regional meets throughout Oklahoma.

    An Instrumental Ensembles Concert with the East Central University Flute, Clarinet and Brass Ensembles will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday [MARCH 24] in the Ataloa Theatre in ECU’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
