    Approximately 11,843 children are living in some type of foster care setting in Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Many have spent their lives in this "temporary" situation and have moved within the child welfare system more times than they care to remember.

    As of Nov. 11, there were 2,569 children in foster care with a goal of adoption, the DHS said.

    Two East Central University graduates have received the High School Teachers of the Year Award for Oklahoma from the Arkansas-Oklahoma-Kansas Section Meeting of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

    Tim Claxton and Sue Ellen (McFarlane) Frerichs received plaques for excellence in physics education.

    Dr. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, a long-time social justice activist, retired professor and writer, will present one of two Hayes Native American Studies Lectures in November at East Central University. She will discuss "Another Shade of Red: Oklahoma's Radical Roots" at 7 p.m. Wednesday [NOV. 19] in the Estep Multimedia Center in the University Center.

    A new music ensemble at East Central University will present its campus debut concert Saturday [NOV. 15] with selections from several theatre and movie musicals.

    SHOWTIME, ECU's premier musical theater performing ensemble, will present the concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Dorothy Summers Theatre. Admission is free.

    A program of music and poetry from 19th century Russia will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday [NOV. 13] at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center. The program is free and open to the public.

    "In Search of Firebird" will feature soprano Dr. Melody Baggech, assistant professor of music at East Central University; pianist Dr. Stuart Deaver, a former adjunct faculty member at ECU; and members of ECU's Russian Club.

    The Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner that serves turkey, ham, vegetables, hot rolls and desserts to more than 3,000 people will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 24 [MONDAY] at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex on North Broadway.

    The dinner is organized annually by members of the Human Resources Club at East Central University, with help from volunteers throughout the community.

    Justin Jones, director of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, will speak at East Central University on Monday [NOV. 10].

    Jones, a graduate of ECU, will speak to combined criminal justice classes about the DOC's opportunities and challenges at 10 a.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center. His presentation is open to all students and the public.
