    Milton Courtney, a 70-year member of American Legion Post 70 in Konawa, will be honored to highlight East Central University’s Veterans and Military Appreciation Day on Thursday, May 17, in ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

    More than 40 vendor tables will accommodate attendees at 9 a.m. and the official program begins at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

    Craig T. Scheef, founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Texas Security Bank and East Central University alumnus, will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award at ECU’s Evening of Honors and Recognition on Friday, May 11, in Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

    “This means a lot. East Central continues to be significant in my life. I’m proud to have been a student and part of the family and community. I’m extremely grateful and humbled,” said Scheef.

    The East Central University Foundation Board of Directors announced that President Emeritus John R. Hargrave has been named chief executive officer of the ECU Foundation, Inc. while Buffy Lovelis has been elevated to vice president and chief operations officer.

     “John is a proven ambassador for the university and the foundation,” said Vicky Petete, chairman of the ECU Foundation Board “With him as our leader, we look forward to working with the university with a shared vision and goal to support the university, faculty, student body and its programs.”

    East Central University has been a common thread for the successful academic endeavors of the Floyd/Allen Family.

    Billie Floyd, an ECU alum who served ECU for 31 years as an educator, and her two siblings – brother Dock Wade Fathree and sister Mary Lou Fathree – all graduated from the university as did her late husband Ben Floyd. All three siblings served as instructors, but Billie remained there the longest. Ben eventually taught biology at Ada High School.

    Billie’s youngest daughter Amy married Russ Allen, who along with many of his family members attended ECU.

    Summer enrollment is currently open at East Central University and the year-round Federal Pell Grant is back.

    Beginning this summer, Pell Grant eligible students have the opportunity to receive up to 150 percent of the scheduled Pell award each year. If a student was Pell eligible in the fall of 2017 and/or spring of 2018, they may qualify for a Pell Grant this summer.

    A student that received a Pell Grant for full-time enrollment for the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018, must be enrolled in at least six hours for the Summer 2018 Semester to be eligible.

    To wrap up its spring season, ECU SCREENS is presenting a recorded-live production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” on Friday, May 4, at 6:30 pm in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

    This new production of Edward Albee’s emotionally charged drama, recorded live at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, stars Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) and Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) as Martha and George.

    Srijita Dia Ghosh, an entrepreneurship specialist, active student and faithful volunteer, has been named the winner of the 2018 George Nigh Award at East Central University.

    The award, presented to a top ECU senior at a luncheon Tuesday, April 24, is named in honor of George Nigh, the former governor of Oklahoma and ECU alumnus. Nigh served four terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, four as lieutenant governor and two as governor. He was also president of the University of Central Oklahoma.

    Janice L. Gray has successfully navigated through many challenges in her life and has never forgotten her alma mater East Central University in the process.

    From working her way through ECU while raising three children to managing a firm of certified public accountants, Gray exemplifies caring and determination.

    Because of her drive toward excellence, Gray will be honored with ECU’s Distinguished Alumni Award on May, 11, at an Evening of Honors of Recognition. She will also address graduates at one of ECU’s two commencement ceremonies on May 12.
