    Three one-act plays directed by students in East Central University's Play Directing class will be presented at 8 p.m. April 23-26 [THURSDAY-SUNDAY] in ECU's Black Box Theatre. Admission is free but seating is limited.

    The Black Box Theatre is located in Room 134 on the ground floor of Science Hall.

    A choral piece that replicates the sound of a thunderstorm, a new choral cycle and works by local composers Victoria Davison and Rudy Lupinski will be on the program for the East Central University Chorus and University Chorale concert Monday [APRIL 20] at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

    The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Steven Walker, professor of music. Admission is free.

    The 55th and final Annual Faculty Exhibition in the University Gallery in East Central University's Art Department is underway from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through May 9. A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today [THURSDAY].

    The department and gallery, now located through the east entrance of the Education Building, will move to the new Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center when it is completed.

    Collage, the national award-winning dance ensemble at East Central University, and students in ECU's dance program will present a concert Friday and Saturday [APRIL 17-18] in the Dorothy Summers Theatre. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

    Students, prospective students and former students, alumni and friends of East Central University are invited to ECU Night in McAlester, scheduled for April 23 [THURSDAY].

    The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the student lounge of the Wanda Bass Building at the McAlester campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College.

    Brandan Rosa of Hugo, a junior majoring in mathematics at East Central University, won the third-place award in the Undergraduate Student Research Paper competition sponsored by the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.

    The competition involved more than 50 undergraduate student research papers from comprehensive and regional schools in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

    Smart Start South Central Oklahoma has launched a community public awareness campaign during the month of April, which is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year's theme repeats last year's theme, "It Only Takes a Minute to Make a Difference in the Life of a Child."

    Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed each April since the first presidential proclamation in 1985.

    Three Garvin County child care centers have received approximately $8,000 in funding to implement the Strengthening Families Initiative in their centers. Great Beginnings Kiddie College and Delta Head Start, both in Pauls Valley, as well as Delta Head Start Lindsay, applied for and received funding for the child abuse and neglect prevention program.
