    State Rep. Todd Thomsen of Ada and Rep. Wes Hilliard of Sulphur will receive 2011 Distinguished Service Awards in Ada Monday [JAN. 9] from Dr. Glen D. Johnson, chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.

    The awards will recognize Thomsen’s and Hilliard’s continued support for higher education.

    Johnson will present the awards at 3:30 p.m. in the Lockmiller Lobby of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. ECU President John Hargrave will represent the Council of College and University Presidents. The public is invited.

    Do you dream of being more flexible, having better balance or finding a workout that makes you dance? If so, East Central University is offering Hatha Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Zumba classes to the community. The Zumba class begins Jan. 10 and both yoga classes begin Jan. 11.  

    “From gentle exercise to medium exercise or a high-energy workout, you will find something that meets your wants and lifestyle,” said Rebecca Gatz, the instructor for the yoga classes.

    Congratulating Andy Roller (center) of Tecumseh, East Central University’s first recipient of the Molly Shi Boren Centennial Scholarship, are Dr. Christine Pappas (left), coordinator of ECU’s Department of Political Science and Legal Studies, and Phyllis Danley, executive director of the ECU Foundation Inc. The scholarship honoring Boren, an ECU graduate, is designed to be awarded to a freshman and continue until the recipient graduates if certain qualifications are met.

    Students in a Social Work II class at East Central University flank Kathy Baker (center left), switchboard supervisor at ECU, and switchboard operator Sherry Brady (center right), the winners of a Veterans Day door decorating contest at ECU. Class members organized the contest to honor veterans and currently serving military personnel. Judging was based on originality, patriotism and creativity. Baker and Brady decorated their door with photos of family members, some of whom are current members of the military.

    Performing at the official launch ceremony in November of the new quarter honoring the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur was the East Central University Clarinet Ensemble. The ensemble performed “Chickasaw Fanfare,” a piece director Michael Whitworth composed for the ceremony, as well other ceremonial music and pieces from its fall concert. The quarter is the 10th coin in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program. Its reverse side depicts the area’s scenic Lincoln Bridge which was dedicated in 1909.

    It’s not too early to begin thinking about scholarship opportunities for the 2012-13 academic year at East Central University.

    The deadline for scholarship applications for the fall 2012 and spring 2013 semesters is March 1, 2012. Applications are available in the ECU Foundation Inc. office and the ECU Student Development Office and on the ECU Foundation website at www.ecok.edu/foundation.
