    With drug and alcohol abuse now considered the top health issue in Oklahoma, a new organization has developed a 12-step plan that involves the community in the fight to prevent abuse and help people who are addicted to find a lasting recovery.

    The East Central University Athletics Department is partnering with McDonald’s in Arlington Center on September 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. for ECU Athletics Night.
    Not only will athletes and coaches from numerous sports be working at the restaurant to raise funds for their department but they will also be participating in a pep-rally at 7 p.m. in the Arlington Center parking lot.

    Smart Start South Central has begun a fundraising campaign to help keep Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library alive in Pontotoc County.

    As is the case with most state-supported agencies, said Trish Little, SSSC community coordinator, Smart Start South Central’s funding has taken a big hit this year, leaving very few funds to keep the Imagination Library program in operation. The program sends a free, age-appropriate book to any Pontotoc County child who registers, up to age 5. It costs $28 per year to fund each child enrolled in DPIL.

    While waiting at the Pontotoc County Health Department, Bennett and Bliss Henson look over some of the books Smart Start South Central donated for the waiting area. Smart Start has donated numerous books to area pediatricians so that young children may look at quality reading materials while they spend time in waiting rooms. Smart Start South Central, which is based at East Central University, focuses on family support, health, child care and school readiness.

    An Ada restaurant will sponsor a dinner Sept. 20 [TUESDAY] for the Guard Officer Leadership Development (GOLD) Program at East Central University. Santa Fe Cattle Company will provide a steak/chicken dinner with sides, salads, and drinks at 6:30 p.m. at the Pontotoc County Agriplex.
     The ECU GOLD Program is a military leadership training program co-sponsored by the ECU School of Business and the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Successful completion of the program leads to a commission in the Oklahoma Army National Guard.

    A free, two-day training at East Central University on “Essentials of Healthy Housing” will identify home improvement and building techniques that can promote safe and sanitary housing as a way to prevent disease and injury.

     Dr. Santa G. Velez of Norman, a nationally certified school psychologist, has joined the faculty of East Central University in Ada as an assistant professor of psychology.

    She had been a certified school psychologist for Norman Public Schools since 1997. She also is a licensed professional counselor in Oklahoma and was a licensed psychologist in Missouri and Iowa.
