    East Central University is offering a Literacy Tutoring Program for children in kindergarten through eighth grades, who are struggling and in need of additional support with reading and literacy development.

    The program will be conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 12-April 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

    The Third Annual Dr. Raniyah Ramadan Research Symposium will feature three speakers from the neuroscience field and an East Central University student on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Raymond Estep Multimedia Center inside the Bill S. Cole University Center.

    The symposium, free and open to the public, is named in honor of the late Dr. Raniyah Ramadan, who was a research scientist in neuro-ophthalmology.

    Aradhna Pillai, a 2008 George Nigh Award winner at East Central University, will deliver the annual Lou Watkins Lecture, entitled “A Life in International Relations,” from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the ECU Foundation Hall in the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

    The lecture is free and open to the public.

    East Central University’s Foreign Film Festival and three Royal National Theatre productions will comprise ECU SCREENS’ return this spring semester.

    Hundreds from ECU and the surrounding communities attended the cinematic events held during the inaugural season of ECU SCREENS during the fall semester.

    The upcoming screenings, which range from contemporary works to classic literary masterpieces, are all open to the public. All films will be shown in the Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center, which acquired new high-quality production equipment this year.

    The Second City, Chicago’s legendary sketch and improvisation comedy theatre, will perform hilarious sketches, songs and improvisation about Ada as well as famed archive material in an event called “The Second City Hits Home” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23, at the Ataloa Theatre of East Central University’s Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    The event features some of Chicago’s brightest comedy players doing what they do best, finding laughs in everything from Ada’s history, events and hot button issues to headlines from The Ada News.

    Love is in the air and it will be celebrated with “A Very Chorale Valentines” at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, in the ECU Foundation Hall of East Central University’s Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

    The event features a dinner, auction and musical entertainment from members of the ECU Chorale.

    Kerri Matheny yearned to finish up earning a college degree, but was saddled with everyday work and family obligations.

    Through East Central University and Oklahoma’s Adult Degree Completion Program called “Reach Higher,” Matheny was able to complete her degree in a year and a half.

    “It worked out really well,” Matheny said. “Much of it was online, since I was working fulltime. Everything was just brought together.”
