    Students from universities in Oklahoma and Texas will come to East Central University OCT 29-30 [FRIDAY-SATURDAY] to sharpen their programming skills while competing in the 35th annual Association for Computing Machinery's International Collegiate Programming Contest.

    The East Central University Flute, Clarinet and Brass Ensembles will perform on the Instrumental Ensembles Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday [OCT. 28] in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center's Ataloa Theatre. The concert is free and open to the public.

    The Flute Ensemble, directed by Juliana Overmier, will perform using many members of the flute family, including the soprano, alto and bass flutes.

    Storyteller and humorist Garrison Keillor will read three poems by Dr. Ken Hada, associate professor of English and languages at East Central University, on "The Writer's Almanac" radio show next week.

    Keillor hosts the daily radio program produced by American Public Media. In each program he presents a list of cultural events and anniversaries, many associated with literature and literary figures, then ends with the poetry reading.

    The Aquila Theatre Company, one of the foremost producers of touring classical theatre, will perform Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Nov. 2 [TUESDAY] at East Central University in Ada.

    Okemah’s Connie Reilly, chair of the Board of Regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma, tosses the coin at East Central University’s Norris Field in Ada to get the football game underway between ECU and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. ECU posted a 23-0 shutout victory over SWOSU.

    Domestic Violence and Disability Awareness Day will be observed Monday [OCT. 18] with informational booths and a seminar at East Central University.

    October is both Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Disability Awareness Month. In addition, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

    The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is changing hosts. Previously managed through Ada Regional United Way, the early childhood literacy program is now based at Smart Start South Central, an early childhood initiative housed in East Central University's Center for Continuing Education and Community Services.

    October is a time for fall festivals, football and... a book drive. Project Invest, a program supporting quality child care in the Ada area, is hosting its annual book drive, focusing this year on collecting books for children ages 0-4.

    New or gently used books can be brought to Vision Bank, Arvest Bank, the main branch of Citizen's Bank, First United Bank, Applebee's, Chili's, Rib Crib and East Central University's Education Building and Bill Cole University Center.
