    The Oka’ Institute, at East Central University, has announced the addition of a marketing and communications specialist.

    Morgan Edwards, from Moore and a recent graduate from ECU, joined the Oka’ Institute fulltime in May.

    Edwards graduated with a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing, as well as receiving a business certificate in promotions management. She has been with The Oka’ Institute since August of 2016, where she served as an intern with a specialty in marketing.

    A $4,400 grant from the Mercy Health Foundation of Ada and the Valley View Foundation enables the East Central University Police Department to have two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for use in campus emergency situations. The defibrillators will be available for someone who has sudden cardiac arrest. It will be an effective treatment for restoring heart rhythm, according to Todd Essary with Mercy Health Foundation Ada. One of the defibrillators is mounted on the wall in the ECU Police Department and the other will be in a patrol car.

    A new residence hall is on the horizon for East Central University.

    With the help of a $10 million bond through the Oklahoma Development Finance Authority’s Master Real Property Lease Program, ECU is projected to have a new residence hall on campus by the fall of 2018.

    The residence hall is being paid for through the Master Lease program issued through the Oklahoma Development Finance Authority. The ODFA issues the bonds for this program that are secured by a lease with the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education and by a sub-lease through ECU.

    Sixty new members were inducted into the Oklahoma Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society at East Central University this past spring in ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

    J. Michael Prince, a global retail executive who has worked in senior leadership positions with some of the most iconic sports and fashion brands in the world, was the recipient of East Central University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award during a recent reception held in his honor.

    An Ada native and graduate of Latta High School, Prince has taken leadership positions with renowned brands such as Nike, Cole Hann, Converse, Hurley, Guess? and Umbro.

    Beginning Monday, June 5, East Central University’s summer operational hours will be from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m.-noon on Friday. This schedule will end on Friday, July 28. The campus will be closed Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4 for Independence Day.

    The East Central University campus and offices will be closed Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day. Campus offices will reopen on Tuesday, May 30, at 8 a.m.

    Burnout and frustration have led to a shortage and massive turnover of teachers who work with special-needs students.

    Dr. Laura Bixler, professor of special education at East Central University, is trying to help fix those problems after recently participating in a forum at the State Capitol. The forum was designed to address ways and ideas in limiting that turnover while improving resources and training for teachers in the State of Oklahoma.
