    Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya, associate professor of English and languages at East Central University, was a participant in the year-long observance of the 50th anniversary of the Russian Language Program in Glastonbury, Conn.

    She gave presentations about Russian folktales to all the Russian classes in Glastonbury, which has the longest-running public school-Russian program in the country.

    Dr. Duane C. Anderson, provost and vice president for academic affairs at East Central University, was named interim president of the university Friday [DEC. 5] by the Board of Regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma.

    Trish Little, Ada Area Smart Start Community Coordinator, organizes literacy books that are being distributed to a four-county area by Ada Area Smart Start at East Central University.  Child care centers and health departments in Pontotoc, Garvin, Johnston and Murray Counties will be recipients of the children’s books through funds made available from Smart Start, Oklahoma’s early childhood initiative.

    Lt. Gen. James D. Thurman, the deputy chief of staff of the U.S. Army, will be named an East Central University Distinguished Alumnus during ECU's fall Commencement ceremony on Dec. 13 [SATURDAY].

    Thurman will receive the highest honor the university bestows upon its former students at 10 a.m. in the Kerr Activities Center. In the tradition of ECU, he will present the commencement address for ECU's December 2008 graduates.

    Question: What kind of impact does an "extra" $20 million a year have on East Central University, the Ada community and beyond?

    Answer: A lot. That $20 million represents money ECU will receive during the 2009 fiscal year from grants and other external funding, not including donations.

    Community members are invited to join East Central University students, faculty and staff members at ECU's annual Holiday Party on Dec. 4 [THURSDAY].

    A reception will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the University Center. The tree lighting will be at 4 p.m. Also scheduled are carol singing and performances by ECU's Brass Choir and Musical Theater.

    The Rotaract Club at East Central University will host Rotary International District 5770 Water Project chair Brian Henderson at 2 p.m. Wednesday [DEC. 3] in the Regents Room of the Memorial Student Union. ECU students, faculty, staff and the Ada community are invited to attend.

    Henderson is a Rotarian from Sayre. He will speak about Rotary's project to provide water filters to villages in areas of Honduras that have no access to clean drinking water.

    John Rutter's "Requiem" will be performed by the East Central University Choir at 7:30 p.m. Monday [DEC. 1] at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ada.

    Dr. Steven Walker, ECU professor of music, will conduct the 54-member choir.
