    The late Wilburn L. Smith, a former president and sales manager of Pre-Paid Legal Services Inc., will be recognized posthumously as the Entrepreneur of the Year Tuesday [MAY 8] at East Central University’s annual Leonard Limes Endowed Lecture in Entrepreneurship.

    Smith will be remembered at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Stanley Wagner Ballroom in the Memorial Student Union. The luncheon is open to the public. There is no cost but attendees must RSVP by 10 a.m. Monday [MAY 7] by calling Jordan Morris in the School of Business at 580-559-5274.

    Learning how to help people resolve conflicts and move on with their lives can be very rewarding, according to a group of volunteers who do just that.

    Each year dozens of Oklahomans agree to give their time and energy to become a volunteer mediator through the Early Settlement Mediation Program. Garvin County, however, is a little short on mediators and needs some volunteers to assist with both community- and court-related disputes.

    The annual Boswell Lecture at East Central University will be held Tuesday [MAY 1] along with a luncheon and a Service-Learning and Volunteer Fair. All the events will focus on poverty and its results in Ada and southeastern Oklahoma.

    A three-week summer institute for high school students will offer free Russian language instruction and sessions about Russian culture June 10-29 at East Central University.

    Startalk: In Search of the Firebird, will improve the language skills of students who will be in grades 9-12 next fall by immersing them into the Russian language and culture. Both beginning students and those at an advanced level of understanding the Russian language and culture will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Staff members at the House of Hope in Ada (at left) accept a check for $150 from members of the East Central University Math Club. The club raised money for the organization by offering ECU students and faculty the opportunity to “PI a Professor” with whipped cream “pies” during Math Awareness Month. Thirteen faculty members volunteered as targets for 123 pies. Additional donations rounded the total to $150.

    Dr. Robert Greenstreet, professor of communication studies and director of forensics at East Central University, has been honored by the Central States Communication Association Argumentation & Forensics Interest Group for his work as a professional director of forensics and communication scholar.

    The award was presented March 30 by Dr. Michael Bauer of Bowling Green State University at the annual CSCA convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Greenstreet is the only person so honored in the history of the association.

    Collage, East Central University’s dance ensemble, and other dance students will present their “Sharing Spaces” spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday [APRIL 27-28] in the Chalmers Herman Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.
