    Enrollment is open for two summer classes at East Central University required for educators wanting to become certified as school superintendents.

    Because of changes last year in state law, educators must complete an approved preparation program and pass the tests for certification in order to add the School Superintendent area to an existing administration certificate.

    An opening reception for the artists in the May senior exhibit at East Central University will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday [MAY 2] in the University Gallery on the east side of the Education Building.

    The ECU Art Department will host the exhibit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through May 9 for seniors Chris Oslin and Ted Neil Wieghard. There is no admission charge.

    More than 30 intersession classes are being offered through East Central University in Ada beginning May 12 as an opportunity to earn three credit hours in one week rather than the traditional 18-week semester. Intersession classes are held between the fall, spring and summer semesters.

    Most of the classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, although some courses are scheduled for half a day and will last longer than one week.

    The first exchange students to come to East Central University from Ukraine will host "Discover Ukraine" at 3 p.m. Tuesday [April 29] in the Hayes Native American Studies Center, located in the Horace Mann Building.

    The 10 students and one professor from the Kiev National University of Linguistics, ECU's sister university, will provide glimpses into the unique Ukrainian culture and discuss the country's geography, history, music and traditions.

    Ada native Jay O'Neal will be honored as East Central University's 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year and will deliver the Leonard Limes Endowed Lecture at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday [APRIL 29] in the Estep Multimedia Center in the University Center.

    The winners of the student business plan competition will be announced at the lecture, which is open to the public. The judges for this year's competition include O'Neal, Jeff Baird, Bill Howells and Dr. Mike Thompson.

    Student conductors will be featured in the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday [APRIL 29] in East Central University's Dorothy Summers Theatre.

    An Instrumental Ensembles Concert in the Park will be presented Sunday [APRIL 27] at Wintersmith Park. East Central University's Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone and Brass Ensembles will perform by the lake behind Wintersmith Lodge at 3 p.m.

    The program will include music ranging from a John Phillip Sousa march to works by Debussy, Scott Joplin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin.

    Two area 5th grade teachers, participants in the Teaching American History Grant projects coordinated by the Center for Advancement of American History at East Central University, made presentations at the National Council for History Education's annual conference April 3 in Louisville.
