It is the mission of the Tommy Hewett, M.D. Wellness Center to provide quality wellness programs and facilities to the student body, faculty, and staff of the University, as well as members of the surrounding communities. The Tommy Hewett, M.D. Wellness Center, located on the top floor of the University Center, offers students as well as members of the community a great exercise and workout facility.
The Wellness Center offers a multitude of options so that your workout routine will never be boring. Whether your interests are free weights, Cybex equipment, group exercise classes, racquetball, indoor track running, or swimming, the Wellness Center offers a wide variety of workout options.
About Tommy Hewett, M.D.
Dr. Tommy Hewett graduated with honors from ECU in 1967, majoring in chemistry with minors in mathematics and biology. He received a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1971 and later joined the Baptist Medical Center staff in Oklahoma City as an associate pathologist. He is board certified in anatomic pathology and in hematology, a sub-specialty of pathology.
Dr. Hewett founded Diagnostic Pathology Services in 1983 and in 1985 started a clinical lab, Baptist Medical Plaza Laboratory, in partnership with Baptist Hospital. He was the medical director for 14 years and also was chairman of the hospital’s department of pathology and director of clinical laboratories. He also has been a clinical professor of pathology at the OU Health Sciences Center. Dr. Hewett has generously endowed a fund to replace and update the equipment in the Wellness Center and his gift will assist the healthful pursuits of ECU students and others for years to come. In recognition of his contribution the facility was named the Tommy Hewett, M.D. Wellness Center on November 5, 2005.
