Shakespeare's Sonnets, a heat-seeking missile, the local Matthew 25 Mission, a John Masefield poem and an antique lawn mower blade lying in the grass provide the inspiration for some of the compositions that will be showcased at the third annual ECU Faculty and Friends Composer Concert on Feb. 12 [THURSDAY]. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center.

The program will feature several premier performances including works for solo piano, solo voice and chorus; a flute, oboe, and guitar trio; a multi percussion piece with snare drum, bass drum hi hat and tom toms; and a soprano saxophone.

ECU piano major Derek Akers of Sulphur will perform "Dream Memories," the 2007 Lynn Freeman Olson National Piano Composition winner written by Ada Junior High School student Zachary Garcia, and the ECU Gospel Choir will perform "White Wings," an award-winning choral work by Connie Quiett, former music teacher at Latta Public Schools.

The ECU Chorale will present the concert finale, performing new compositions by Victoria Davison of Ada and ECU faculty member Rudy Lupinski.

This year's composers also include ECU Music Department faculty Dr. Ben Finley, W.T. Skye Garcia, Dr. Mark Hollingsworth and Dr. Alan Marshall, with the assistance of Dr. Melody Baggech, Dr. Starla Hibler and Dr. Steve Walker. Edmon Perkins, a new faculty member from the Math Department, joins the concert this year, performing his own composition for solo piano.

Three outstanding student composers, Tommy Long of Tecumseh, Angela Marshall of McAlester and Casey Taylor of Oklahoma City, who were members of the new ECU composition studies class, will share their latest compositions with the assistance of ECU students Rebekah Unruh, Ardmore, and Whitlee Freeman, Drumright.

The concert is free and open to the public.
