ADA – The Second Annual Dr. Raniyah Ramadan Symposium will feature speakers from the neuroscience field on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Estep Auditorium of East Central University’s Bill S. Cole University Center.
The symposium is named in honor of the late Dr. Raniyah Ramadan, who was a research scientist in neuro-ophthalmology.
“Our daughter had a belief in promoting science and research, especially in the neuroscience field,” said Dr. Tawfik Z. Ramadan, who along with his family, sponsor the event. “We do this because we feel that we belong to ECU.”
Among the list of four speakers and their topics are: Dr. Rheal A. Towner speaking on Advances in Magnetic Imagining to Help Diagnose Primary Brain Tumors: A focus on Pre-Clinical Evaluations; Dr. Beverley Greenwood-Van Meerveld on Visceral Pain: It’s all in your Head; Dr. Nawajes Mandal on Understanding Retinal Degeneration; and Niran Hadad, recipient of the Ramadan Undergraduate Research Scholarship at ECU. His subject is Mechanisms of Stress-Induced Bladder Dysfunctions.
Towner is an associate member and director of the Advanced Magnetic Resonance Center, member of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and member of the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience.
Greenwood-Van Meerveld is director of the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience, Presbyterian Health Foundation Professor of Neuroscience, professor of physiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and VA Career Scientist.
Mandal is an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and member of the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience at the OU Health Sciences Center.
The symposium is being facilitated by the ECU Biology Department, Tri-Beta Biology Club and ECU College of Health and Sciences.
“The purpose of the symposium is to show what’s being done in the neuroscience research field and to engage scholarly activities between the two universities (East Central
University and the University of Oklahoma),” said Nick Cheper, professor and chair of ECU’s Department of Biology.
The Ramadan family also sponsors on all-day event similar to this event at the OU Health Sciences Center each year. The family invites the public to attend the free event on Jan. 30.
