ECU MUSIC STUDENT WINS COMPETITION IN SAN DIEGO
Angela Marshall of McAlester, a senior music major at East Central University, was named the winner of the Alexander A. Bendazzi/Strayer University Prize for Art/Music/Dance Papers recently at the national convention of Alpha Chi national college honor society in San Diego. She received a monetary award as her prize.

Two other ECU students also presented papers. Melissa York, a senior psychology major from Ada, presented her research, “Emotional Timeline: Expectations Regarding the Emotional Reactions of Sexual Assault Victims.” Graduate student Daniel Manual of Ada presented “Respectful Communication Reduces Barriers” in the communication division. York also was named an alternate in the scholarship program.
Co-sponsor Rebecca Gatz, instructor of mass communication, also attended the convention.
ECU’s Oklahoma Gamma Chapter earned the Star Chapter designation as one of only four chapters that has won it every year since its inception in 1996.
In addition to the presentations, the students visited the world-famous San Diego Zoo and dipped their toes in the Pacific Ocean.
The convention featured scholarly and creative presentations by more than 260 students. Alpha Chi has some 300 chapters in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Members are in the top 10 percent of juniors,seniors and graduate students in all academic fields.
