ECU’S LINSCHEID LIBRARY, ADA PUBLIC LIBRARY PARTNERING TO CELEBRATE THE FREEDOM TO READ DURING “BANNED BOOK WEEK”

East Central University’s Linscheid Library is partnering with the Ada Public Library in cherishing the freedom to read during “Banned Books Week,” set for Sept. 25-30.

A series of events is scheduled to celebrate the freedom to read and raise awareness of the harms of censorship.

Throughout the week, anyone can participate in a scavenger hunt by visiting the Linscheid Library or Facebook.com/ECUlibrary each day from Sept. 25-29 to find a clue. Those who find the banned book cover at its hidden location, can follow the instruction on the back to return it for a prize.

Here is a list of the weeklong activities:

Monday, Sept. 25: A kickoff party will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second floor of the Linscheid Library. Refreshments, snacks and a photo booth will be available, along with the opportunity to sign up for an Ada Public Library Card.

Tuesday, Sept. 26: Check out challenged and banned comics on display and make your own comic. Materials for creating a comic will be available at both libraries.

Wednesday, Sept. 27: Get engaged with the community Wednesday through short talks from librarians, journalists, college students and faculty about censorship and intellectual freedom. The event is from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

Thursday, Sept. 28: A readout is scheduled from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. outside the Linscheid Library. Participants will read out loud a portion of their favorite banned or challenged book and listen to others reading also.

Saturday, Sept. 30: A movie night will wrap up the week of activities on Saturday at Wintersmith Park, starting around dusk. Join the community in a free showing of The Lorax, based on the banned book of the same name by Dr. Seuss. The movie showing is sponsored by the Ada Public Library.

The event is being sponsored by the Linscheid Library Academic Friends (LLAF).
