ECU TIGER SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM TO HOST LIVE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE WITH NATIONAL BRITISH DEBATE TEAM ON OCT. 7
East Central University’s Tiger Speech and Debate Team brings a live parliamentary debate, featuring the National British Debate Team, to the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in the ECU Foundation Hall.
The debate is free and open to the public.
In addition to the debate, a workshop will be held the same day from 2-4 p.m. in Room 103 of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.
Two of ECU’s Tiger Speech and Debate team members - Jaime Aupperle of Moore and Carl Lewis of Mansfield, Texas - will debate head-to-head with two members from the National British Debate Team in Chessy Whalen and Matthew Wilmore.
Whalen recently finished her three-year bachelor of arts degree in history at Balliol College at the University of Oxford. While at the university, she was an active member of the Oxford Union Debating Society and represented Oxford at various national and international tournaments. Whalen was a quarterfinalist at the recent European Championships in Vienna in August.
Wilmore recently completed a master of law degree in human rights at the University of Edinburgh. He received first-class honors from the University of Sheffield in politics and philosophy. He was a debating coach and judge since 2013 and ran sessions across England, Scotland and Belgium.
This is East Central University’s second year to sponsor a team to go up against the National British Debate Team. Funding has been provided through a grant with the ECU Cultural Activities Committee.
