FORMER ECU SOFTBALLER CORREA WINS 2012 GAC DEGREE COMPLETION AWARD
East Central University’s Cami Correa is one of five recipients of the 2012 Great American Conference Degree Completion Award, it was announced on Friday by the league office in Russellville, Ark.
Correa, who just completed her two-year softball playing career with the Lady Tigers, will receive a $1,500 award from the GAC. There were 12 applicants and Correa was one of the five selected by virtue of her academic and athletic standings as well as financial needs for the upcoming year.
“This is one of the more valuable ways that we’re able to assist our student-athletes. I hope that we can expand the program in future years,” said GAC Commissioner Will Prewitt.
Correa, a catcher and designated player, was second in the GAC in runs batted in (42) and slugging percentage (.653); third in doubles (15) and total bases (98); fifth in home runs (8) and sixth in batting average (.393).
She is from Brawley, Calif. She transferred to ECU after playing two years at Arizona Western College.
Other recipients of the GAC award were three other softball players – Ashley Ray (Henderson State), Courtne St. Claire (Southeastern Oklahoma State) and Sara Strassemeyer (Ouachita Baptist) – along with baseball player Jeremy Soliday (Southwestern Oklahoma State).
