ECU SCREENS continues its Seventh Annual Foreign Film Festival with “The Golden Dream” on Friday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. in East Central University’s Raymond J. Estep Multimedia Center of the Bill S. Cole University Center.

Winner of the Mexican Academy of Film’s Best Picture Award, “The Golden Dream” will be introduced by Dr. Errol King, assistant professor of Spanish at ECU.

Admission is free and open to the public. The screening is not recommended for children.

After each Festival screening, lucky viewers win generous gift certificates donated by area businesses, including: Amber’s Sweet Shoppe, Cinemark Ada, Delicias Mexican Restaurant, Misal’s Indian Bistro in Oklahoma City, Mojo’s Coffee Bar and Cafe, Nacho Biznez, and Truffles and Swirls at Brown’s Pharmacy. Additional door prizes include books, works of art, and DVDs relevant to the featured film.

Diego Quemada Diez’s directorial debut, “The Golden Dream” follows three teenagers from Guatemala as they begin a treacherous journey across Mexico hoping to find a better life in America. This “fluid and electric” (Wall Street Journal) road story has won numerous awards, including two at the Cannes Film Festival, through its “tough, yet tender and beautifully crafted” (Empire) depiction of the immigrants, who are soon joined by a young Tzotzil Indian who does not speak Spanish. “The movie exists in a space beyond arguments about immigration policy and border security,” writes Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times, and “… speaks to something indelibly human about dreams and their costs.”

On Feb. 24, after the Festival’s final screen—the Lebanese film “Where do we go now?”—

one viewer will win a “Grand Prix” door prize that will include an assortment of gift certificates, including one free night at the Hampton Inn in Ada, and a three-month subscription to “Try the World.” Try the World will send the winner a box filled with authentic gourmet food and snacks curated by expert chefs and produced by local artisans. Each month’s box will feature food from a new country.

ECU’s Seventh Annual Foreign Festival is presented by ECU SCREENS, which collaborates with Sigma Tau Delta and ECU’s Honors Student Association to bring memorable cinematic experiences to our community. This year’s festival enjoys support from ECU’s Cultural Activities Committee and the ECU Foundation.
