NEW STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION HOFFMEISTER TO MEET WITH ECU FACULTY, STUDENTS; CONDUCT TOWN HALL MEETING

New State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister will meet with East Central University faculty and students and conduct a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the ECU Foundation Hall of the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center.

Hofmeister has a full day planned in the Ada area. She will tour schools in the morning and then meet with the ECU faculty and students that afternoon from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The day will end with a public reception at 4 p.m. at the Chickasaw Business and Conference Center with a Town Hall Meeting to follow in that same venue from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Area superintendents/administrators, area teachers, Career Tech personnel, community leaders and parents are welcome to attend the reception and Town Hall Meeting.

Hofmeister is a former public school teacher and businesswoman, who has devoted her life to teaching students and promoting higher student achievement. She was appointed to the Oklahoma State Board of Education by Gov. Mary Fallin in January, 2012, where she served through two legislative sessions before pursuing the state schools superintendent position.

In the private sector, she has spent 15 years operating Kumon Math and Reading Centers of South Tulsa, which works through parent partnerships to ensure higher academic achievement for children. During that time she has personally worked with more than 4,000 students to improve their educational outcomes.

Hofmeister graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Christian University and holds teaching certificates in English and elementary education. She has actively participated in the Trends in International Math and Science Study research testing. She is earning her master’s degree in education administration with a specialty in education policy and law from the University of Oklahoma.

As a mother of four graduates of Oklahoma’s public school system, Hofmeister served as an officer for the Jenks Public Schools Foundation Board of Directors, the Select Committee for the Study of School Finance and other committees within the Jenks Public School District.

While acting as state superintendent, she will sit on the Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) Board.

She and her husband, Gerald Hofmeister, reside in Tulsa.
