OSLIN, WIEGHARD ART EXHIBIT OPENS FRIDAY [MAY 2] AT ECU
An opening reception for the artists in the May senior exhibit at East Central University will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday [MAY 2] in the University Gallery on the east side of the Education Building.
The ECU Art Department will host the exhibit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through May 9 for seniors Chris Oslin and Ted Neil Wieghard. There is no admission charge.
Oslin will present a variety of art spanning many different mediums, including clay pottery, large scale oil paintings and watercolor.
Wieghard's work consists mainly of mixed media using collage, monotype and watercolor.
"I like to think of my work as sort of an external X-ray - I like to capture the aura from a photo. Just real intense lights and darks - something that can be expressed using only two colors if necessary," the artist said. "Bold contrast keeps an image honest."
"I sort of embrace the unorthodox," Wieghard continued. "For instance, I don't really draw by hand that often. That probably sounds like anathema, but I have met so many people who won't even attempt art because they can't draw - that's a self-limiting attitude."
Wieghard remembers the day instructor Kate Rivers introduced him to monotype printmaking, which he claims kept him from giving up on art.
"That saved me," he said. "Her paintings had this mystique about them which I was intrigued by. I believe the process of monotype is the most direct path to expressing one's subconscious emotions visually."
