Since coming together at the Yale School of Music in 1999, So Percussion has been creating music that is both raucous and touching, barbarous and refined. With the realization that percussion instruments can communicate all the extremes of emotion and musical possibility, it has not been an easy music to define.

Called an "experimental powerhouse" by the Village Voice, "astonishing and entrancing" byBillboard Magazine, and "brilliant" by the New York Times, the Brooklyn-based quartet's innovative work with today's most exciting composers, in addition to their own original music, has quickly helped them forge a unique and diverse career.

Members of the ensemble are Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, Jason Treuting and Eric Beach. So Percussion is well known for recording and touring internationally and for its work with composers such as Steve Reich, David Lang and Evan Ziporyn.

So Percussion also has begun to produce original music, starting with a CD/DVD project, "Amid the Noise," that includes video art created by Jenise Treuting. The ensemble experimented with glockenspiel, toy piano, vibraphones, bowed marimba, tuned and prepared pipes, metals and an Ethernet port.

Called "astonishing and entrancing" by Billboard, and "brilliant" by the New York Times, the 20-something group was created to give fresh voice to what co-founder Jason Treuting calls "funky contemporary music."

So Percussion received the John Cage Award last year from ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) for the artistry and passion with which they perform, commission, record and champion today's music.
