Students from Moore’s Southmoore High School and Grove Middle School were the grand prize winners in the 2011 Oklahoma State Science & Engineering Fair held annually at East Central University in Ada. Approximately 237 projects were vying for cash prizes and other awards.

 The $500 Best of Fair Award in Division I went to Ashley Sowder, a senior at Southmoore High School, for her project, “Social Immunity of Apis mellifera as an Antimicrobial Indicator of CCD.

” Souder also was awarded a trip to compete in the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles from May 8 to May 13.

Meahgan Duggan, a 9th grade student at Grove High School, won the $500 Best of Fair Award in Division II for her project, “Are Herbicides hurting our Beneficial Soil Organisms? Testing for toxic effects of Glyphosate & Flumioxazin on Lumbricus terrestri and Bacillus subtilis.”

Southmoore High School and Grove Middle School also won school team trophies for having the most winners in the competition’s nine categories.
