    Brandan Rosa of Hugo, a junior majoring in mathematics at East Central University, won the third-place award in the Undergraduate Student Research Paper competition sponsored by the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.

    The competition involved more than 50 undergraduate student research papers from comprehensive and regional schools in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

    Smart Start South Central Oklahoma has launched a community public awareness campaign during the month of April, which is also Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year's theme repeats last year's theme, "It Only Takes a Minute to Make a Difference in the Life of a Child."

    Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed each April since the first presidential proclamation in 1985.

    Three Garvin County child care centers have received approximately $8,000 in funding to implement the Strengthening Families Initiative in their centers. Great Beginnings Kiddie College and Delta Head Start, both in Pauls Valley, as well as Delta Head Start Lindsay, applied for and received funding for the child abuse and neglect prevention program.

    Jim Lehrer, the nationally respected executive editor and anchor of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS, will present the commencement addresses May 9 [SATURDAY] for East Central University students completing bachelor's and master's degrees this spring and summer.

    Six former educators with ties to East Central University will be inducted into the Gene and Evelyn Keefer Educators Hall of Fame at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday [APRIL 15] in ECU's Danley Hall atrium.

    The inductees are Kenneth Murphy, Billie Floyd, Leon and Mary Pauline Lanoy, the late Ray Stout and the late John Zimmerman.

    To celebrate the 2009 International Year of Astronomy and East Central University's Centennial, ECU's Society of Physics Students will host a free public lecture on astronomy at 7 p.m. Friday [April 17] in the Estep Multimedia Center in the University Center.

    Dr. Bill Romanishin of the University of Oklahoma will discuss "Boy Beyond Neptune: A look at the amazing discoveries in the outer solar system in the last 10 years."

    East Central University's top senior, Jacobi Nichols of Healdton, will be awarded the prestigious George Nigh Award Tuesday [April 14], at a luncheon in the South Dining Hall of Taff Cafeteria in ECU's Memorial Student Union.
