Ada Area Success by 6 has a new name - Ada Area Smart Start. It will continue to be the same program but will be expanded into Garvin, Johnston and Murray Counties.
Smart Start is Oklahoma's statewide early childhood initiative. Through a shared commitment, active collaboration and innovative leadership, Smart Start seeks to provide better opportunities for the state's children and families.

Dr. Charlie Jones, professor of business administration at East Central University, has been honored for his contributions to the achievements of post-secondary students with disabilities.
Jones received the 2008 Advocacy, Cooperation and Concern for Encouraging Student Success (ACCESS) award from the Oklahoma Association on Higher Education and Disability (OK-AHEAD). The presentation was made at the association's yearly conference.

One house in the new Arts District of Ada @ East Main Street will be selected each fall to be repainted at no cost to homeowners through a grant East Central University's Art Department has received from Campus Compact, a national coalition dedicated to campus-based civic engagement.

Dallas Coplin, a former assistant manager of the Yukon Fine Arts Center, has been named facilities coordinator for the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center at East Central University.
The center is nearing completion and is expected to open in January 2009.

Summer enrollment at East Central University is up 10.8 percent over last year, university officials have announced. This summer, ECU has a total full-time equivalent of 1,783.5 students compared to 1,609.1 students in 2007.
Graduate student enrollment posted the highest increase at 20 percent, based on full-time equivalent enrollment, climbing from 609 in 2007 to 730 this summer, said Pamla Armstrong, director of admissions and records and registrar.

Art students at East Central University received scholarships and cash awards this spring at the Annual Art Awards Reception in the University Gallery. The awards were based on students' portfolio performance in the 53rd Annual Student Exhibition.

Students in East Central University's College of Health and Sciences have received recognitions and awards for their academic achievements during the 2007-08 academic year.
In the Department of Biology, recipients of the Claud Carter Scholar Award were Lindsey Pruitt of Bokchito, Julie Bruner of Healdton and Casey Chatfield of Ada. The Thomas J. McKnight Scholarship went to Brandon Banks and Jessie Wooten, both of Shawnee. Charity Holder of Coalgate was recognized for her second-place oral presentation at the Tri-Beta Biological Society's Regional Meeting.
