    True-life war stories about R V Burgin were shared in the blockbuster Emmy-Award winning HBO Series “The Pacific.” Now Burgin will personally share his stories at the Seventh Annual Louise Young Diversity Lecture at 7 p.m., March 10, at East Central University’s Ataloa Theatre in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    The event is free and open to the public.

    Making outstanding efforts and achievements in actively creating a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors, East Central University was recently recognized as a Certified Healthy Oklahoma Campus at the excellence level.

    Additionally, ECU achieved an award as a Certified Healthy Oklahoma Business as well.

    The Certified Healthy Oklahoma Program showcases organizations and communities, and in this case campuses, that are committed to fostering environments that support healthy choices.

    The East Central University Music Department will present the Ninth Annual ECU Faculty, Students and Friends Composer Concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 23, at the Ataloa Theatre of the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center.

    The concert is free and open to the public.

    W.T. Skye Garcia, composer, is the concert series coordinator.

    The program will feature music composed by Steve Filkins, Dr. Benjamin T. Finley, Anna Tynsky, Tori Davison, Rudy Lupinski, Michael McCrea, Ashley Tucker, Kendra Grasser, Josey Allen, Zach Garcia, Steven Davidson and W.T. Skye Garcia.

    East Central University alumnus James Gaar, who has a passion for painting and appreciation for abstract expressionism, will have an exhibit from Feb. 16-March 13 at ECU’s Pogue Art Gallery.

    The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays.

    Gaar earned his bachelor’s degree from ECU in 1966 and later picked up his graduate degree in art education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1976.

    A night of Oklahoma City Thunder basketball, featuring pregame appearances on the court by the East Central University Chorale and the ECU Gold Program, will take place Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.

    Thunder and ECU fans can also enjoy a pregame party at Mickey Mantle’s Steakhouse.

    Individuals with low and fixed incomes have the opportunity for free tax return assistance as East Central University and the Harland C. Stonecipher School of Business will once again participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program.

    VITA is a national program, supported by the Internal Revenue Service. The returns in the VITA center will be e-filed. ECU students, along with other volunteers, will provide the service.

    Outstanding academic work during the 2014 fall semester has earned listings on the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s Honor Roll for students at East Central University.

    The President’s Honor Roll is reserved for students who earned A's in all their courses for a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The Deans’ Honor Roll lists students who have at least a 3.33 grade point average with no grade lower than a C.

    At least 12 credit hours must be completed successfully during the semester to be included on either honor roll.
