    East Central University has been selected as a Certified Healthy Campus by the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

    There are three levels of certification: basic, merit and excellence. ECU received merit certification with the help of its new tobacco-free campus policy.

    In honor of the holiday, a city-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Monday, Jan. 21.

    Because the day is a federal holiday, many consider it to be a day off. Members of King’s family have urged that his service to our country be honored by considering it ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off’.

    The City of Ada is coordinating the service effort which will consist of picking up trash and debris throughout the city.

    Landmark Bank President Dale Boatwright presents a scholarship check to East Central University Foundation Executive Director Phyllis Danley. The yearly $750 check goes toward scholarships and this year will be applied toward assisting the ECU Chorale trip to Washington, D.C. in December of 2013.

    Eleven teachers were recently honored during East Central University’s Marvin Stokes Endowed Lecture, hosted by East Central University’s College of Education and Psychology. Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year for 2012, Elaine Hutchison, delivered the lecture.

    East Central University nursing instructor Jeff Jordan has been inducted as a Fellow into the prestigious Academy of Emergency Nurses, it was recently announced in Des Plaines, Ill.

    The AEN fellowship is an honor recognizing emergency nurses for their contributions to patient care in and out of the emergency department.

    Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby will address candidates for bachelor’s and master’s degrees during fall Commencement ceremonies at East Central University on Saturday, Dec. 15.

    The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the Kerr Activities Center for 242 candidates for bachelor’s degrees and 102 candidates for master’s degrees.

    Anoatubby has served as governor of the Chickasaw Nation since 1987. His effective leadership has led to ongoing growth within the tribe.

    East Central University is all about second chances.

    ECU and Oklahoma’s Adult Degree Completion Program, called Reach Higher, make it possible to return to college while working and raising a family.

    “With the new year coming, it’s a perfect opportunity to get a fresh start or second chance toward obtaining your bachelor’s degree in a flexible format that’s very convenient,” said Dr. Shirley Mixon, Professor of Business and Director of the Oklahoma Degree Completion Program.

    One-hundred and one East Central University students were inducted into the Oklahoma Gamma Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national college honor society, in a Dec. 4 induction ceremony.

    Membership in Alpha Chi is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior and senior classes. At ECU, students must have a least a 3.5 grade-point average to be eligible to join.
