    The Center of Continuing Education and Community Services at East Central University will offer Workplace Spanish for Bankers starting Feb. 7 [THURSDAY]. The cost is $100 per person. If four or more enroll from the same company, the cost will be $75 per person. The class will meet on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. through March 13. Prior knowledge of Spanish is not necessary. The cost is $100 per person. If four or more enroll from the same department or agency, the cost will be $75 per person.     An informational meeting about a proposal to ask the city to close portions of two streets adjacent to East Central University's Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center will be held Tuesday [JAN. 15] at the Source, 730 E. Main.

    The come-and-go meeting will be from 4 to 6 p.m., said Bridget Forshay, community development coordinator of the East Main Cultural Arts District. Refreshments will be available.

    East Central University's administrative offices will close at 5 p.m. Friday (DEC. 21) and reopen at 8 a.m. Jan. 3 (THURSDAY).

    ECU faculty members will return to the campus on Jan. 7 [MONDAY[. Orientation for beginning freshmen will be held on Jan. 8 [TUESDAY], as well as regular enrollment for any students who have not enrolled for the spring semester.

    Spring classes will begin on Jan. 9 [WEDNESDAY].

    The Elvis Karaoke and Elvis Look-Alike Contests are shaping up to be two of the New Year's most fun-filled events, according to organizer Dr. Donna Gough.

    Gough will host the contests Dec. 31 [MONDAY] as part of the first-ever First Night Ada New Year's Eve Extravaganza which will be held at East Central University.

    Dr. Micheal Thompson, a successful businessman and professor of marketing and management at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., has been named dean of East Central University's School of Business. He will join the university on Feb. 1.

    He succeeds Dr. Bill Chapman who had served as interim dean since July.

    The first new Steinway pianos in East Central University's program initiative to become an all-Steinway school have been delivered to ECU's Music Department.

    The three Boston UP-118S Studio Upright pianos, designed by the famous piano manufacturer Steinway and Sons, also are the department's first purchase of new pianos in more than 10 years and the first multiple purchase in more than 20 years.
