    Franc D'Ambrosio, a multi-talented singer and actor best known for his impressive portrayal of the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of The Opera,” will perform Feb. 28 at East Central University.

    He will guide the audience through the different sections of his show, “Franc D'Ambrosio’s Broadway – Songs from the Great White Way,” a celebration of the music that has established Broadway as an American art form.

    Students from approximately 60 high schools will compete Tuesday morning [FEB. 14] in the 96th annual Interscholastic Meet at East Central University. It is the oldest and largest meet in Oklahoma.

    Approximately 600 students will take 1,597 tests in categories ranging from accounting to world history.

    An Evening of Celebration Banquet, Comedy Show and Dance will be held Feb. 17 [FRIDAY] at East Central University as part of Black Heritage Month.

    The banquet will honor the trailblazing ECU students who were the first African American athletes to play on ECU teams.

    The African American Heritage Committee Inc. and the ECU Office of Campus Life and Leadership are co-sponsors and will begin the evening at 7 p.m. with an exhibit celebrating the contributions of the trailblazer athletes.

    The deadline has been extended for another week for the 10-day trip to Paris and Limoges, France, in East Central University’s Study Abroad Program.

    Dr. Mara Sukholutskaya and Ben Johnson, faculty members in the Department of English and Languages will lead the trip from March 17 [SATURDAY] to March 26 [MONDAY]. The ECU group will be hosted by the University of Limoges.

    Participants will experience French culture and history along with immersion in the French language and can earn six hours of academic credit in French culture or language.

    Dr. Terry Cluck and Dr. Charles Biles, professors of biology at East Central University, were among 52 active researcher-educators who judged student presentations in microbiology recently at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in St. Louis, Mo.

    The Astronomy Club at East Central University will bring out the telescopes Monday [FEB. 6] for a viewing of the moon and Jupiter. The viewing will be from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the ECU Observatory northeast of Norris Field.

    Parking is available at the ECU Physical Plant. The observatory is about 100 feet up a hill to the north. The viewing will be canceled if it is cloudy or raining.

    “If in doubt, don’t come,” said Dr. Carl Rutledge, ECU professor of physics.

    The next viewing will be of Mars, Jupiter and the Orion Nebula from 9 to 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 [THURSDAY].

    Students in East Central University’s School of Business are participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program again this year to provide free assistance to individuals with basic tax returns, particularly those with low and fixed incomes.

    The national program is supported by the Internal Revenue Service.

    The VITA site will open Feb. 6 at a new location, 1001 N. Country Club Road, where the former Carl Albert Indian Health Facility was located. April 12 will be the last day the assistance will be available.
