    Mathematics Awareness Month will be observed at East Central University in April with a Chalk Art Competition and a guest speaker.

    The ECU Math Club and Art Club will sponsor the Chalk Art Competition from noon until 2 p.m. April 3 [FRIDAY] on the campus mall. Artists must be current ECU students, and designs must be mathematics-related. Winners will be announced and cash prizes awarded at 2:30 p.m.

    Tenor Robert Hansen will be a guest artist in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday [MARCH 29] with East Central University music faculty members Dr. Melody Baggech, soprano, and Dr. Starla Hibler, piano.

    The concert of English songs, duets and arias will be presented by ECU's Department of Music at the Ada Arts and Heritage Center, 14th and Rennie. Admission is free.

    East Central University is in the midst of celebrating its 100th birthday, and as part of the year-long celebration, ECU has established a four-year scholarship for all first-time beginning freshmen.

    The university was established on March 25, 1909, as the East Central State Normal School.

    The fourth annual Scissortail Creative Writing Festival will be April 2 - 4 [THURSDAY-SATURDAY] at East Central University. What began four years ago as a few local writers coming together to share their work has grown into a three-day festival that features over 50 regional authors and is attended by approximately 1,000 people.

    A few openings remain for the trip in May to Russia and Ukraine being organized by East Central University's Study Abroad Program.

    Participants will explore three Russian capital cities, Kiev, Ukraine, and Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, from May 13 to May 31. In addition, the trip offers six hours of academic credit which can be applied to ECU's new Russian studies minor.

    Several dignitaries will attend the "Celebrating our Beginning" festivities Wednesday afternoon as ECU marks its 100th birthday.

    Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby, Regional University System of Oklahoma Chair Joe Anna Hibler and Ada Mayor Barbara Young will bring greetings to ECU following the 4 p.m. Whistle Blowing event.

    Dr. Louise Young, a 1969 graduate of East Central University, will deliver a lecture titled "Why Talk About It? Addressing GLBT Issues" at 7 p.m. Monday [MARCH 30] in the Estep Multimedia Center in ECU's University Center.

    A reception sponsored by the Human Diversity Committee in honor of Young and Women's History Month will be held at 6 p.m. in the University Center. Women from the Ada community are invited to attend.

    East Central University will officially turn 100 years old on March 25. It is such a momentous occasion that ECU plans to celebrate all week, March 23 -- 27, as part of an on-going year-long centennial celebration. Everyone is invited to help ECU make history by not only celebrating the past, but looking toward the future as part of ECU's centennial commitment to encompass the past and enrich the future.
