Oklahoma public school teachers now have the opportunity to send their own children to East Central University through the ECU Teacher’s Promise Scholarship Program.

ECU Teacher’s Promise is a $1,500 scholarship offered to all Oklahoma public teachers children who meet the criteria.

“We would like to say thank you to the public school teachers of this state,” said ECU President Dr. Katricia G. Pierson. “With the countless hours of teaching they put in helping the children of our state learn and grow, we would like to provide this opportunity for their own families and children.”

Crystal Cosper, an ECU alum and teacher in the Stonewall Public School system, praised ECU’s intentions.

“It truly warms my heart to know that ECU understands what it’s like to be an Oklahoma educator in today’s educational climate,” Cosper said. “They have made it financially easier on my family for my daughter to attend ECU as an upcoming freshman next fall. Thank you so much for the Teacher’s Promise Scholarship!”

It appears that other teachers and friends are excited about this opportunity. Facebook posts of this announcement have already received nearly 1,000 shares. One Facebook comment said “Great opportunity for funding college at one of the best Universities in Oklahoma! Freshman eligibility…check it out.”

The $1,500 tuition waiver per year ($750 per semester) can be applied up to four years (or eight semesters) as first-time, fulltime freshmen are eligible.

Requirements are that the potential ECU student be a dependent of an Oklahoma public school teacher, that the parent and student be Oklahoma residents, that the student meets regular ECU admission standards and that a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be on file with the university.

ECU’s Teacher Promise Scholarship does not stack up with other institutional awards. A student’s highest scholarship award will apply. This is a tuition waiver and not a cash award.
