    Becky Matthews (left) and Kelcey Vangundy, students at East Central University, wait to register voters at Wal-Mart last Saturday [SEPT. 27]. Students will register voters at five locations Saturday morning [OCT. 4], Apple Market, Dollar General in North Hills Centre, Hastings, Sav-A-Lot and Nichols Dollar Saver. Students in ECU's Department of Political Science and Legal Studies are working to register 500 voters before the November elections. Saturday's effort will be part of ECU's Service Saturdays community service program.

    Nataly Keeton, a senior at East Central University, has been awarded a $3,000 American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students for the 2008-09 academic year.

    A graduate of Dickson High School and a member of the Choctaw Nation, Keeton also has received a scholarship from the Oklahoma Society for Certified Public Accountants and scholarships from the ECU Foundation Inc.

    An explanation of the current financial crisis facing the United States will be presented at East Central University Monday [OCT. 6] by two economics and finance experts in ECU's School of Business.

    Dr. Jim Rauch and Dr. Zhimin Wang will speak at 6 p.m. in the Estep Multimedia Center on the first floor of the University Center. The presentation is open to the public.

    Three noted percussionists will lead East Central University’s second annual Marching Percussion Festival for area high schools Oct. 2 [THURSDAY] beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Norris Field in Ada.

    Five astronomy viewings are scheduled in October and November at East Central University's observatory northeast of Norris Field.

    The evening schedule includes a viewing of the Moon and Jupiter from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 7 [TUESDAY], the Andromeda galaxy and Jupiter from 8 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, the Moon and Jupiter from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 and Venus and Jupiter from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 20.

    A free one-day workshop at East Central University on Oct. 7 [TUESDAY] will detail the in-progress revision of Oklahoma's Comprehensive Water Plan and include hands-on instruction in researching legislative and legal issues related to water rights in Oklahoma.

    The Human Resources Club at East Central University will hold its third annual Benefit Bingo Oct. 6 [MONDAY] to raise money for the 30th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

    The benefit will begin with a mini session at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 72 at 4015 N. Broadway. Regular session games will begin at 7:45 p.m. Drawings will be held for door prizes at the end of the games. The grand prize will be a 32-inch Sanyo flat screen high definition television.

    Games for children, free food and a donation drive for military troops serving overseas will be part of Family Day tailgate activities at East Central University on Saturday [SEPT. 27] before the football game between ECU and Northeastern State University.

    The activities will be set up from noon to 2 p.m. on the lawn east of Kerr Activities Center, across from Norris Field. The football game will begin at 2 p.m.
